The Railway Walk Conservation Group
The Railway Walk Conservation Group provides a range of practical, conservation volunteering projects and community events based on the Milton Keynes Railway Walk, which passes through the north of the town from Wolverton to Newport Pagnell. Its practical projects take place on Fridays and its community events on Saturdays and Sundays. Its programme of activities is shown below.
The Railway Walk, which is about 5km long, offers visitors a time travelling adventure that passes through many historic locations that help to chart the evolution of the area, from Neolithic, Roman and Medieval times, through the Industrial Revolution and onto the 21st century New Town. The remains of old stations can be seen and for most of its length it runs close to the Grand Union Canal. The Walk is open at all times to pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders. Its embankments boast a variety of interesting habitats, including woodland, species-rich grassland and hedgerows.
Since January 2010, BTCV has been working with Milton Keynes Council (the Walk’s owner) to improve the entire length of the Railway Walk. This work is making it more attractive and welcoming to visitors. Proactive management of its embankments and other greenspaces also provides a better home for a wider range of plants and animals too. In addition, a new conservation group is being set up as part of the project, to provide an easy way for local people to get involved in its care and have a say in its future management. Future plans including making the Walk a major focus for heritage-based activities, events and community activities.
The Friday projects offer a range of practical activities for you to get involved with, including scrub management and clearance, tree planting, fencing and managing areas for wild flowers.
The weekend and other community events include a family friendly mixture of practical projects, guided walks and indoor and outdoor activities, such as building nest boxes (to take home), minibeast safaris, chances to get better acquainted with wildlife and opportunities to create wonderful artwork using natural materials.
BTCV provides all the tools and equipment needed and arranges for insurance cover and refreshments for tea breaks etc. All practical projects and community events are run by fully trained Project Leaders. Practical projects are suitable for anyone over the age of 18 to attend. Most community events are suitable for all ages, although those under 16 must be accompanied by a responsible adult.
You don't need any special skills to join our work along the Railway Walk, other than a willingness to get involved and a basic level of physical fitness. There isn't an interview process and we don't ask for a commitment from anyone for more than one day at a time. We provide on-site, informal training and guidance as part of our delivery of projects and events, to ensure that everyone can make a personal contribution to their delivery and learn through this process too.
All Railway Walk Conservation Group projects and events are free and run in a professional but fun, friendly and positive way. First timers are always very welcome.
