Forestry and Environment Learning Programme
What is it?
We have been commissioned by Forestry Commission Scotland to provide an outdoor learning experience, and possible route to employment, for young people aged 18-25. We believe that our young citizens can gain a lifetime of inspiration from a positive first experience of our natural environment. Get Some Credit is a new opportunity for young people to become successful learners and confident individuals.
We are looking for motivated individuals, not currently in employment and aged 18-25, to join us for an intensive 10-week period of work experience and environmental learning. Each successful participant will be paid at current minimum wage rates for the duration of the programme and will also receive a generous learning package. Placements will be located at our Stirling, Grangemouth and Edinburgh offices. There will be two enrolment periods starting w/b 31 October 2011 & 16 January 2012 where six young learners will be employed to undertake an intensive 10-week learning activity with a view to providing a range of skills and experience designed to assist them in finding employment within the environmental/landscaping/forestry sectors.
Accreditation of outdoor learning
Learning will be delivered through a structured programme of classroom based training and outdoor environmental activity which could include Northern Council for Further Education units e.g. tree felling, habitat management, drystane walling and coppicing. It is an opportunity for learners to develop their hard and soft skills, increase their confidence and gain practical hands-on experience whilst working alongside others.
Our learning offer will be focussed on meeting the needs of young people and the prospective employer whilst ensuring that their experience with BTCV Scotland provides an enjoyable and positive step towards employment, where young people are mentored and supported throughout their journey.
Work with us
We seek to work with youth referral agencies to provide interested and motivated young people with the opportunity to undertake environmental learning whilst gaining recognised accreditation that will help to boost confidence and improve employability.
The training and outdoor learning will be tailored to best support the young people you work with and fulfils the Government’s vision of supporting young people to be successful learners, confident individuals, effective contributors and responsible citizens. Get Some Credit supports the key concepts of outdoor learning: challenge, enjoyment, relevance, personal development and an innovative approach to learning.
