Success at Coed Bell
Tuesday, 23 June 2009
Prestatyn and District Environment Association have successfully completed work at Coed Bell, an ancient woodland on the East outskirts of Prestatyn, that has been carried out due to their successful Lottery bid of £10,000 last summer.
The group have cleared paths through the wood which already existed but had been overrun with brambles. This has lead to the Prestatyn Walking Festival to again be able to take walks through and up the woods to the vantage point at the top where the scheduled ancient monument is found. The work also allowed more bluebells to come through this year and the work began at the top path where there were brambles and other overgrown shrubs with Prestatyn Youth Club Members who cleared a huge area over a period of three days during half term holiday in May. There were marshmallows roasted over the glowing ashes. Kissing gates have been installed to be more dog friendly, a better path up from the road is now protected from the cattle in the field and will not become so muddy and finger posts have been installed to give walkers a better sense of direction. Later an information board will be put in by Denbighshire.
Due to this fantastic work there is already a large increase in walkers taking advantage of the better paths. The wood is inhabited by many species and is found in the AONB in Flintshire and Denbighshire.

The Queen's Award for Voluntary Service by Groups in the Community
Tuesday, 11 November 2008
In 2002, in celebration of Her Majesty’s Golden Jubilee, the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Award for Voluntary Service by Groups in the Community was established. Its purpose is to recognise groups of individuals who are giving their time freely for the benefit of others. It is the highest honour that can be bestowed upon groups of this kind and is equivalent in status to the MBE. As such, the Queen’s Award not only serves to provide recognition of volunteer groups, but also demonstrates the high respect in which volunteering is held.
Recently, Greystones Community Action Group, who are part of BTCV's Community Network, has been awarded the Queens Award for their work. BTCV would like to acknowledge such a great achievement and also encourage other Community Network members to apply for this prestigious award.
