BTCV London : London tasks

Tuesday 7 February 2012

London Action Teams

Baynes Street and Waterlow park

How can I get involved?

Whether you have just one day or lots of time to offer, are a regular or completely new to volunteering, you can join one of our task days, working alongside other like-minded people to protect, enhance or even create worthwhile green spaces across the capital.

Our work helps to encourage biodiversity (the variety of plant and animal life), protect threatened habitats and species and improve access to sites so that people can appreciate and enjoy the diversity of wildlife that exists even within London.

We have dedicated teams working from offices across the capital, covering a range of sites and a range of days.

In addition BTCV’s Trust for Urban Ecology have teams working on specific sites around Greenwich and Southwark on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, and we have a BTCV award-winning Green Gym running at Camden on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

You can join the teams on site if it’s local to you, or (in most cases) meet up at a designated collection point and be taken to and from the project in one of our action team minibuses. Check out the individual office pages for more details.

What actually happens?

The days are run by experienced leaders who provide the tools and expertise, explain the project, detail the different tasks and how to tackle them, and give health and safety advice. Even complete conservation novices can get involved.

Tea and coffee are provided, so all you need to bring is suitable work clothes, stout footwear, lunch and plenty of enthusiasm.

The work involved varies with the sites and the seasons. You might be tree planting or rhododendron clearing, step mending or charcoal making, building a pond dipping platform, bird boxes, or planting raised beds for a sensory garden. You may even learn some new skills and use tools you’ve never come across before.

But whatever you do your day will be fun, worthwhile and rewarding!

Nb. Volunteers are covered by personal injury and public liability insurance.

Social night

It’s not all hard work – every first Thursday of the month BTCV volunteers are invited to meet up at the Lincoln Lounge Pub on York Way near both the King’s Cross office and the station. Everyone is welcome. Email greenvolunteers@hotmail.com.
