About Kinashibetsu Wetland Trust

Kinashibetsu Wetland Trust is part of the Association of National Trusts in Japan. It manages the Kinashibetsu Wetland a 1000 ha nature reserve which covers a variety of habitats from wetland to ancient forest and lush river to barren cliff top. There is also some valuable warm over-wintering habitat for fish which provide food for the endangered Japanese crane, white tailed eagle and grey heron. The land is owned by various people who have come together and agreed to promote conservation activities.

BTCV and Kinashibetsu Wetland Trust

BTCV has been working with the Kinashibetsu Wetland Trust since 1997 following interest from the National Trusts of Japan to establish the principle of conservation volunteering. In conjunction with Genshi Sakakabira, one of the keenest of the reserve's landowners we've run some of our most successful and interesting International Conservation Holidays. We've continued to use the example, in conjunction with others in Japan, to help promote volunteering nationwide. BTCV is currently engaged with several partners in Japan to support an initiative to create a national conservation volunteering organisation.

Joint Achievements

Between us, we've been running volunteer projects since 1997. During this time, as well as a huge range of practical conservation activities, we've been able to work together to promote volunteering further in Japan. The very presence of volunteers from the UK and elsewhere has been a great encouragement and has always generated local and national publicity.
