Expectations

A helping hand up

BTCV International Conservation Holidays are fantastic group events. Unlike many international volunteer projects you're not being sent somewhere to just get on with it alone. Each holiday has a BTCV trained leader working along with local leaders to ensure that you're not only doing something useful, but having a great time too.

You should expect to live and work as part of the team - contributing not only to the work, but to domestic activities such as cooking and shopping too - and probably sharing some great time-off together. The group aspect is one of the best parts of the experience and if you're the type who likes 'mucking in' and getting to know new people then this is just the thing for you.

Some periods during the holiday are defined as 'down time', during which you are free to do whatever you wish, but obviously will be beyond BTCV's jurisdiction - you wouldn't want to be nannied too much anyway! These may be during evenings or on days off depending on whether you are taking part in an organised activity or would prefer to do your own thing. In these cases, for your own safety and the comfort of others, it's expected that you indicate what you plan to do, and when you may be expected to return.

Code of Conduct

BTCV has a responsibility for all the people we work with - their health, safety and welfare, and to ensure they enjoy the experience of a BTCV International Conservation Holiday. In addition, both BTCV and our local partner organisations have responsibilities in the areas we work in and often the effectiveness of our work is dependent on maintaining good local relations and reputation.

A simple common-sense code of conduct is in place, and we expect all participants to adhere to it.

All participants are expected to:

  • Follow Health and Safety guidance given by leaders relating to work, accommodation and other activities.
  • Not be under the influence of alcohol or intoxicating drugs at any time when working, avoid excessive drinking at other times, and controlled drugs at any time during the holiday.
  • Respect the views and opinions of others.
  • Avoid compromising the reputation of BTCV or the partner organisation through deliberate personal actions.
  • Inform leaders of plans if leaving the group and an expected return time.
  • Inform BTCV in advance or when they arise of medical or other conditions that may affect ability to function on the particular project.
  • Make a reasonable contribution to the planned work, communal domestic activities and the social aspects of the holiday.
  • In the event this Code of Conduct is not adhered to, BTCV reserves the right to impose reasonable sanctions. These can range from restricting the activities an individual may take part in, to removal from the holiday. In the case of removal, reasonable efforts will be made to return the individual to the original meeting place, and their emergency contact will be informed of the action and their whereabouts. Any costs associated with repatriation will be the responsibility of the individual.
