Training for Employment or a New Career

If you want to progress your career, get a job, or look for a job in the environment sector BTCV can help you. We also work directly with employers, helping many learners to secure jobs, often in the environment sector.

Our range of training offers many occupational skills in specific subjects. However it will also enable you to develop and demonstrate valuable additional skills that employers need – such as communication, team working and problem solving.

Short Courses
Our short courses run from 6 hours upwards. You can do a number of these to build up a range of skills as you progress and widen your ability in your chosen subject. They can be helpful If you’re studying for a degree or similar qualification and need practical skills to supplement your studies. We have over 1000 courses a year to choose from in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Long Courses
The long courses vary in length depending on the subject and, where applicable, on the qualification. They can range from 30 hours but most are spread over 10 to 40 weeks, some part time, some full time.

This training is available free to people who are in receipt of benefit, depending on age and sometimes on length of unemployment, although those working part time may also be eligible. Where training is already funded through European sources, it may be free to all.

Employment Programmes
Many of our long courses are provided by BTCV through a range of programmes that are specifically designed to help people into employment or a new career. These include New Deal and Job Centre Plus programmes in England and Wales and Jobskills in Northern Ireland. We also run programmes through the European Social Fund in some areas.

Volunteering
Volunteering is a well-recognised route into a job or career, and has enabled many people to make a complete change of career and lifestyle. BTCV employed 16% of its Volunteer Officers in 2004. It’s an easy way to try different work types, before investing too much of yourself.

Volunteering means that you can develop experience and show skills to an employer, such as:

  • Communication
  • Punctuality and reliability
  • Decision making
  • Problem solving
  • Commitment
  • Leadership
  • Maintaining working relationships
