Parnwell Project Keeps Growing!

Youngsters planting herbs

Youngsters have been digging deep, helping to create a more colourful outlook for Parnwell – planting up raised beds in their Community Centre garden.

And their efforts were rewarded with an official opening and plaque unveiling attended by Alan Lord (Chief Executive Officer of Family care, who oversee provision of education for pre school children in the area) and Local Councillor Mark Collins.

Created by the local Friends group, the garden forms part of a wider Parnwell project funded through the Fair Share lottery programme, and being co-ordinated and supported by BTCV.

Rockery takes shape

Alongside the garden, which was designed to feature wildlife areas as well as beds for growing sensory and edible plants, the Friends have been working hard on other public spaces, turning neglected and overgrown corners on their estate into eye-catching green spaces.

Having secured extra ‘muscle’ in the form of manual and mechanical support from Bardon Aggregates to clear a 90-feet-long patch earmarked for a shrub rockery, the Friends group welcomed extra volunteers from Mansfield Skills Centre to help manhandle their rockery stone into place.

Planting in progress

Barn Garden and Aquatic Centre then donated 100 rockery alpines to the project as well as giving a discount on their other plant purchases. Since then the central tree has been planted and the next phase of work will involve path creation and shrub planting.

Now they are hoping to start discussing the regeneration of ‘the Pirate Park’ as it’s known locally.
