BTCV wins 2009 Charity Award
BTCV has won a 2009 Charity Award in acknowledgement of its achievements over 50 years.
The Charity Awards recognise excellence in the voluntary sector. BTCV’s award, in the Animals and Environment category, marks its dedication to conservation volunteering over five decades.
BTCV is now the world’s largest team of green volunteers, operating throughout the UK and in 26 countries. It makes a significant impact on the UK and International environment by inspiring 300,000 people to look after more than 50,000 places.
BTCV Chief Executive Tom Flood said: “What BTCV does for people and the environment has evolved significantly over our 50 year history. We have developed projects that have a positive impact on how people think, feel and behave towards their environment and their community. We have led the way in bringing together environmental, social and economic aims, transforming them into practical activity. Financially, research shows that £1 invested in our work can yield a measurable social return on investment of around £4 – sometimes more.
“This award recognises the work and achievements of all our volunteers, their communities, and the partner organisations we have worked with since 1959. It rewards their dedication to BTCV and the environment. We all owe each and every volunteer a big thank you.”
Third Sector Excellence Awards 2007
BTCV was a runner-up in the ‘Most Improved Trustee Board Category’.
Following a period of active Board self-reinvention which began at the end of 2006, BTCV now has a small and effective board of eight trustees (soon to increase to up to 10), drawn from across the UK and from different backgrounds. Through a new strategic agenda, BTCV has been able to tackle a wide range of issues, such as defining its impact, the outcomes of environmental volunteering and the “UK-ness” of the organisation, recognising the altered political contexts across all four nations. The Board has also committed to living by its environmental values by signing the Third Sector Declaration on Climate Change (which BTCV helped to initiate).
To be shortlisted is valuable recognition of the step-change in governance that the Board has led. BTCV will remain committed to its continuing journey to increase transparency and strategic support and oversight for management.
Awards
Charity Awards 2007, Highly Commended
BTCV’s diversity journey gained commendation in the 'animals and the environment' category at the Charity Awards 2007.
BTCV has made significant strides in advancing diversity within environmental volunteering. It has worked hard to improve volunteering opportunities for less advantaged groups by training and adapting its workforce, and tailoring projects to make them more relevant. In 2006 BTCV supported over 40,000 volunteers from under-represented groups including black and minority ethnic communities, young people at risk and people with mental and physical health issues.
The annual Charity Awards ceremony, sponsored by the Charities Aid Foundation and The Times Public Agenda section, is the most high-profile event in the charity world calendar.
